This dramatic necklace is made by the Huichol Indians from the Planteros Cooperative. The Huichols are a small tribe of approximately 15,000 living in central western Mexico near Ixtlan in the Sierra Madre Mountains. They are said to be the last tribe in North America to have maintained their pre-Columbian traditions. Because of this they are famous for their strong ceremonial tradition, rich mythology and incredible visionary artwork. Shamanism pervades every aspect of Huichol life, from the way they plant their corn to the way they raise their children. Their joyful way of life reflects a dynamic shamanic tradition. Huichol shamans and healers still practice today as they have for unnumbered generations. A piece of jewelry from this tribe is truly special! The pendant on this necklace measures 1.5 inches long and 1.25 inches wide. The coral, jade & sterling necklace measures a dramatic 25 inches long.
