Description
This lovely necklace is made by the Huichol Indians from the Planteros Cooperative. The Huichols are a small tribe of approximately 15,000 living in central western Mexico near Ixtlan in the Sierra Madre Mountains. They are said to be the last tribe in North America to have maintained their pre-Columbian traditions. Because of this they are famous for their strong ceremonial tradition, rich mythology and incredible visionary artwork. Shamanism pervades every aspect of Huichol life, from the way they plant their corn to the way they raise their children. Their joyful way of life reflects a dynamic shamanic tradition. Huichol shamans and healers still practice today as they have for unnumbered generations. A piece of jewelry from this tribe is truly special! This necklace is considered 'Medicine Art' with the 5 cardinal points in the blossom. The sterling silver pendant measures over one inch long and just over one half inch in diameter not including the bail. The blossom is made of antler, and it is inlaid with sterling silver and coral. The coral, turquoise & sterling necklace measures a dramatic 24 inches long. The necklace that you see in the photo is the actual necklace you will receive.
